Amsterdam, Netherlands ◊ Ámsterdam, Países Bajos

Después de un tiempo viajando por el continente americano toca volver a Europa y a una de mis ciudades favoritas: Ámsterdam. Hacía tiempo que teníamos ganas de visitar esta ciudad y después de ponernos de acuerdo con uno de los mejores amigos de Fabio y su novia, decidimos reservar los billetes, el hotel y hacer una pequeña escapada. La verdad es que los viajes en grupo siempre me han gustado, al menos cuando sabes que te encuentras en buena compañía, así que creo que hizo que este viaje fuera aún más inolvidable. Era una suma de "primeras veces", primera vez en Holanda, primera vez que volábamos con la compañía KLM  desde Ámsterdam hasta Roma, (el viaje de ida volamos con Alitalia, que se ha convertido en nuestra más fiel amiga desde que fijamos nuestra residencia aquí). 

So after a couple of trips around America it's time to go back to the old Europa and to one of my favourites cities ever: Amsterdam. It's been a couple of years since we wanted to explore the city but we never find the right time, but finally last year we made it, we booked the flight, the hotel and travelled to Holland for 4 days. We went to Amsterdam with one of Fabio's best friend and his girlfriend, I love travelling in group, at least when you know that you get on well with people and when you know that you expect the same so this  made the trip even more special. It was also a "first-time" trip: first time in Netherlands, first time travelling with KLM from Amsterdam (the one from Rome was with Alitalia, lately it has became one of our very close friends since we are living here!)

¿Dónde dormir?  Aquí os traigo de nuevo uno de mis grandes descubrimientos, o al menos eso espero. Después de pasar un par de semanas buscando hoteles decidimos reservar uno que estuviera cerca del centro, de la zona de compras, pero también cerca de los sitios más turísticos y si pudiera, cerquita de la estación central de trenes. ¿Mucho pedir, verdad? Pues lo encontramos, se llama Ibis Styles Amsterdam Central Station , a un precio de lo más espectacular, situado a escasos 7 min de la estación de tren y al ladito del centro, este moderno hotel es uno de los mejores en cuanto a relación calidad-precio, además, tienen el desayuno incluido. Todas las habitaciones están decoradas de manera moderna y funcional, es una de mis recomendaciones si vas a visitar esta ciudad y buscas la comodidad y la mejor comunicación, además es muy silencioso! Como más adelante os contaré, uno de los cuatro días que estuvimos lo aprovechamos para viajar hasta la cercana ciudad de Utrecht y pasar una noche, esta vez reservamos en el Park Plaza Hotel, muy cerca de la estación de tren pero un poquito alejada del centro de la ciudad, mi recomendación es que si buscáis aprovechar el día al máximo (y entre tanto buscar algún rato de descanso en el hotel), reservéis alguno que esté un poco más central, al rededor no hay prácticamente nada, a excepción de un pub irlandés que si no recuerdo mal estaba cerrado por aquel entonces.

Where to sleep? Here we go again with one of my great discoveries, or that's what I hope it will be at least! After spending a couple of weeks looking for the best hotel we decided to book one who was close to the city centre, but also near the main attractions and if it could, close to the central station. Too much to ask, right? We found it! Yay! It's called Ibis Styles Amsterdam Central Station, for such a great price  and just 7min far from Central Station, this modern hotel is one of the best value in town! I also forgot to mention that breakfast is included! Rooms are comfortable and decorated in a modern way, really a bargain!  And I will also talk to you later about our quick trip to Utrecht, we decided to spend one of our days in Holland in the wonderful and cute city, this time we booked at Park Plaza Hotel, that even if it was comfortable a modern (we booked the deluxe room!) it was a bit far away from the city centre and there were not really anything around it, so if you want to take the most of your day in Utrecht and also have a couple of hours to relaz in your hotel, I will recommend you to book one closer to the downtown.

Zaandam

¿Qué hacer? Como casi todas las ciudades europeas, Ámsterdam tiene una gran variedad de actividades turísticas: visitas a museos, paseos por el río ... La verdad es que la ciudad es una auténtica maravilla y merece la pena pasear y pasear para disfrutar de sus canales y sus tiendas.Nosotros viajamos a mitad de noviembre del año pasado y la decoración navideña ya estaba encendida, lo que hizo que la ciudad resultara aún más encantadora (tengo una debilidad especial por las luces de navidad!). Algo de lo que ya os he hablado anteriormente es de las pequeñas escapadas que hacemos cuando estamos visitando una ciudad en concreto: uno de los cuatro días que habíamos planeado pasar en Ámsterdam lo utilizamos, finalmente, en conocer Utrecht, a penas 1h en tren desde la capital. Utrecht me pareció una ciudad maravillosa, más pequeña y pintoresca aún si cabe que Ámsterdam, pasear por el centro de la ciudad y disfrutar de su belleza es simplemente estupendo, por no hablar de los mercadillos navideños que había en la época y la enorme cantidad de adornos y comida típica que podías comprar, totalmente recomendado si vas a hacer una escapada un poco más larga y quieres aprovechar para conocer otra ciudad holandesa. Nos habían hablado muy bien de una pequeña localidad muy cerquita de Ámsterdam llamada Zaandam, está a penas 30min en tren desde la estación Central y merece la pena visitarla, los edificios son de lo más particulares y cuenta con un centro comercial abierto que es una auténtica monada, además de encontrar una gran variedad de tiendas de todo tipo, las casitas que lo forman hacen que parezca un pequeño pueblo en medio de la nada, fantástico para un día de compras lejos del bullicio del centro de Ámsterdam.

What to do? As almost every single european city, Amsterdam has a huge variety of touristic spots: museums, river walks, ... The truth is that the city on its own is a true wonder and it worths walking through its streets and enjoying its shops and canals. We visited the city in November so Christmas deco was already lightened up what made the city eve more special!  Something that I have already talked to you about is the trip we made while we were in Amsterdam: one of the four days we were there, we decided to travell to Utrecht, only about 1h far from the capital. Utrecht was absolutely wonderful, smaller and more special than Amsterdam,  it was magical to walk in by its streets and even if it was too cold and foggy we couldn't miss to discover it from head to toe! There were so many christmas markets and we had the chance to taste some typical dishes that were so incredibly tastefull, so if you're planning to spend more than a couple of days in Amsterdam and you want to explore anther great city, Utrecht must be on your list. We had heared about a little town called Zaandam, 30min away from Central Station by train and I can loudly say that it worths visiting it! Buildings, little shops... It's like an open shopping centre sorrounded by a a river, you won't stop looking at every single corner because it's so beautiful wherever you will look at! It's such a great place to shop away from the busy Amsterdam downtown.

¿Dónde comer?  Creo que lo mejor es ir ordenando por comidas los sitios donde estuvimos, esta vez me salto los desayunos ya que mientras estuvimos en Ámsterdam desayunábamos en el hotel (ya os he dicho que venía incluido en el precio de la habitación) y en Utrecht fuimos al archiconocido Starbucks (y he de decir que después de vivir en Madrid durante 5 años, echo de menos de vez en cuando tomarme un gran moca blanco en Italia...). Para comer y cenar pasó algo muy parecido, optábamos por comida rápida o incluso cenas y comidas en el hotel (el hotel de Utrecht tenía un maravilloso restaurante en el que cenamos estupendamente), como siempre en nuestros viajes al extranjero buscábamos probar un poco la comida típica del lugar, además siempre intentamos buscar algo que sea orgánico y nos llamó la atención que entre blogs y páginas webs profesionales nos hablaran de los supermercados Albert Heijn, donde puedes disfrutar de algunos de los platos típicos del país y además, llevarte a casa algunos de sus productos. Y por último no podía dejar de hablaros de uno de mis restaurantes favoritos en el mundo entero, paseábamos por Zaandam y decidimos entrar a tomar algo en una de las casitas a orillas del canal, me encantó desde el primer momento pero me quedé maravillada cuando pude ver el interior, probamos sus platos (con menús distintos para aperitivos, desayunos, comidas y cenas) y desde entonces he querido volver, se trata del 't Groene Pandje, y estoy segura de que en cuanto veáis las fotos, entenderéis mi fascinación, gran recomendación para todos vosotros.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Volvemos a Sudamérica. Ahora toca viajar hasta la capital de Argentina, Buenos Aires. Como ya os he contado antes, mientras estuve de intercambio universitario en Brasil tuve la oportunidad de viajar  bastante, uno de los lugares que más nos apetecía conocer era Argentina, así que nos decidimos por su capital, y entonces... nos enamoramos.

Creo que no he oído nunca a nadie hablar mal de Buenos Aires, todo el mundo que ha ido ha quedado fascinado. Y nosotros no fuimos menos, ¿qué era? No me preguntéis, quizá fuera la gente, sus calles, los restaurantes, su exquisito vino... Una parte de mi corazón se quedó allí sin duda. 

Llegamos en un vuelo directo desde Río de Janeiro, de nuevo viajando con TAM, y una vez fue un viaje estupendo (como os habréis dado cuenta, TAM se ha convertido en una de mis aerolíneas favoritas. Además tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer el trayecto en business, el menú era exquisito y la atención por parte de las azafatas fue magnífica, extra cómodos los asientos y las comodidades que te ofrecen por viajar en una categoría superior). El vuelo aterrizó bien entrada ya la noche, así que desde el aeropuerto nos recomendaron coger un taxi hasta el hotel, ¿el precio del trayecto hasta el hotel que se encontraba en el barrio de Recoleta? Aproximadamente unos 200 pesos argentinos, unos 20€.

We are back to South America. Now it's time to travel to the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires. As I've told you before, while I was in university exchange in Brazil we had the opportunity to travel a lot, and one of the places we most wanted to visit was Argentina, so our next stop, Bs As and then ... we  felt in love. 

I think I have never heard anyone say "I don't like Buenos Aires", everyone who has been there has been fascinated,,and so we were! What was it? Do not ask me, maybe it was the people, streets, restaurants, exquisite wine ... I left a part of my heart there (so... this means I will need to come back soon!)

We arrived  from Río de Janeiro, again flying  with TAM, and once again it was such a great trip (as you may have noticed, TAM has become one of my favorite airlines, we went on business, the seats where extra comfy, and the menu was absolutely fantastic, so good experience!). The flight landed safely late at night, so they recommended us taking a taxi from the airport to the hotel that was located in  the neighborhood of Recoleta? Approximately 200 Argentine pesos, about 20 €.

¿Dónde dormir? Cuando viajamos a Buenos Aires era noviembre del 2012, tras una búsqueda de un par de semanas decidimos que, esta vez, queríamos algo un poco mejor, así que nos hospedamos en el Buenos Aires Grand, como ya he dicho antes, en el barrio de Recoleta. El hotel era fantástico, había sido inaugurado a penas dos meses antes por lo que estaba dotada de las ultimas tecnologías y con un mobiliario moderno  pero a la vez acogedor,  se notaba que aún estaba por terminar  en algunos  aspectos (no había lista del servicio de minibar, precios por lavandería etc), pero el hotel era una verdadera maravilla. La primera noche nos quedamos en la habitación básica, pero tras algunos problemas con la televisión y con la iluminación nos ofrecieron un upgrade a una habitación superior, ésta era mucho más espaciosa. He de comentar que el personal fue sencillamente maravilloso, todo lo que te puedes esperar de un hotel de 5 estrellas (y como ya sabéis, cuando reservas un hotel, al final lo haces esperando los servicios del precio que has pagado). Quizá lo único que me desilusiono un poco fue el desayuno, algo escaso y demasiado sencillo para mi gusto.  

Es una buenísimas opción para hospedarse si estás pensado en ir a Buenos Aires, a su alrededor puedes encontrar una gran cantidad de restaurantes y bares abiertos hasta tarde, tiendas donde poder ir de compras y, además, podrás llegas a pie a algunos de los monumentos históricos más conocidos de la ciudad.

Where to sleep? When we went to Buenos Aires was in November 2012, after  looking for a hotel for a  couple of weeks, looking at the different options and prices, we decided that this time we wanted something a little better, so we stayed in Buenos Aires Grand. (as I said before, in the neighborhood of Recoleta). The hotel was fantastic, it was  opened barely two months before our arrival so it was equipped with the latest technologies and modern furniture but welcoming at the same time. You could tell he was yet to finish in some respects (no service list minibar, laundry prices etc), but the hotel was a marvel. The first night we stayed in the basic room, but after some problems with the lighting and television offered an upgrade to a superior room, it was much more spacious. I have to comment that the staff was just wonderful, everything you expect from a 5-star (and as you know, when booking a hotel, you do end waiting services price you paid). Perhaps the only thing that disappointed me a bit was the breakfast somewhat lacking and too simple for my taste.

¿Dónde comer?  Si vas a Buenos Aires (y, bueno, a Argentina en general) no puedes perderte su carne ni, por supuesto, su vino. Durante nuestra estancia tuvimos la suerte de contar con algunos amigos que se encontraban viviendo allí para que nos llevaran a algunos de los restaurantes más típicos, otros os descubrimos Fabio y yo por nuestra cuenta. En primer lugar os quería hablar de un restaurante típico argentino que se encuentra en la plaza Dorrego, en pleno corazón de San Telmo, pero cuál ha sido mi decepción al comprobar que no lo han cerrado… Pero antes de salir de San Telmo, pasaros por el Bar Plaza Dorrego San Telmo, un clásico de la capital con un aire diferente, conserva mobiliario antiguo  y podrás elegir entre una enorme variedad de bebidas, ¿el único problema? ¡Siempre está lleno! Otra gran opción es Parilla Aires Criollos, un magnífico restaurante en el que podrás degustar la carne argentina en su mejor estado (si no comes carne, tranquilo, hay muchas otras opciones en la carta) y podrás beber vinos estupendos, y todo a un precio realmente espectacular, ¡no dudéis en ir! Para una comida tranquila, siempre disfrutando de la cocina argentina y a un precio más que razonable visitad Almacén y Restaurante Suipacha, en el corazón de Buenos Aires. 

Where to eat? If you go to Buenos Aires (and, well, Argentina in general) do not miss their meat and, of course, wine. During our stay we were lucky to have some friends who were living there for a while and that took us to some of the most typical restaurants. First I was so excited because I wanted to talk about a typical Argentine restaurant located in Plaza Dorrego, in the heart of San Telmo, that we totally loved because of their food and their wine and because you could sit on the balcony and have lunch while you see tango shows live in the square, but what was my disappointment when I found out that it's now closed ... But before leaving San Telmo, stopping by Bar Plaza Dorrego San Telmo, a classic! With a different air,  antique furniture ... You can choose from a huge variety of drinks, the only problem?It's hard to find an empty table! Another great option is Parilla Aires Criollos, a superb restaurant where you can taste the argetinian meat at its best (if you do not eat meat, don't worry, there are so many other options on the menu) and you can also chose a great wine, and all at a price really spectacular, do not hesitate to go! For a quiet meal, always enjoying the Argentina kitchen and a reasonable price visist Suipacha Almacén  y restaurant in the heart of Buenos Aires.

¿Qué hacer? Hay muchísimas cosas que visitar en Buenos Aires.  Tienes que hacer un hueco en tu agenda para visitar los distintos barrios: la elegancia de Recoleta, el espíritu bohemio de Palermo (y sus maravillosos puestos ambulantes o las tiendas vintage que encontrarás en cada esquina), no te olvides de visitar el barrio de Boca y las maravillosas casas de colores de Caminito.  La ciudad es digna de recorrerla a pie, así que te recomiendo que planifiques  tu itinerario por barrios, después podrás moverte de uno a otro con taxi, el precio es verdaderamente barato por lo que podrás ayudarte de ellos para ver la ciudad de punta a punta. 

No olvides visitar el mercadillo de San Telmo, en el barrio del mismo nombre, puedes acceder desde distintos puntos, no te vayas sin recorrer todas sus tiendecitas donde podrás encontar auténticos tesoros, desde gafas de sol vitage, muebles antiguos, tocadiscos, CD y LP's... Maravillas auténticas a precios realmente bajos.

Si vas a quedarte más de tres días en la ciudad y te apetece, no dudes en visitar Uruguay. Uno de los días que estuvimos en Argentina decidimos visitar el país vecino, no hay más que coger el pasaporte, acercarte al puerto y pagar el billete de ida y vuelta en el mismo día para tu destino, nosotros queríamos volver en el mismo día por lo que decidimos visitar la ciudad de Colonia. Fue uno de los mejores viajes que recuerdo, el trayecto fue tranquilo a través del río de la Plata y nada más llegar alquilamos un buggi para visitar la ciudad al completo, tuvimos tiempo para pasear por la costa, conocer el barrio histórico de la ciudad… Es una experiencia que de verdad merece la pena. Si decides visitar esta peculiar ciudad uruguaya, acuérdate de parar a comer en ElDrugstore (con una decoración muy alegre y una carta de comidas bastante buena, eso sí, algo un poco más cara de lo normal) y si quieres comer con vistas, déjate caer por Mesón de la Plaza,el pescado es una delicia, ¡y no hablemos del vino! 

P.D: No os olvidéis de cambiar de dinero cuando lleguéis a Uruguay, nos avisaron en el hotel que no les gusta el cambio al peso argentino.

What to do? There are many things to see in Buenos Aires. In your plan there a lot of things that can't be missed like visiting  different neighborhoods: the elegance of Recoleta, the bohemian spirit of Palermo (and its wonderful stalls or vintage stores that you can  find in each corner), do not forget to visit the neighborhood of Boca and the wonderful and colorful houses of Caminito. The city is worth exploring on foot, so If you want an advice, go one neighborhood  first and then go to the next one,  you can easily  travel from one to another with taxi, the price is really cheap so you can help your feet and  see the city from end to end!.

Don't forget to visit San Telmo Market, in the same neighborhood, you can reach it by different entrances, but pleas do not leave it without seeing every single shop there are really huge treasures waiting for you in these messy little shops: from vintage sunglasses, to CD'S, radios, tv's, everything you can imagine you will find it there, and it's so freaking cheap!

If you're staying more than three days in the city and you feel like to, be sure to visit Uruguay. We were staying in Buenos Aires for 5 days so we decided to visit the neighboring country, all you have to do is  get your passport, get close to the port and pay the ticket for the boat! (I don't remember exactly how much it was, but it was pretty cheap). We wanted to come back on the same day so we decided to visit the city of Colonia. It was one of the best trips I remember, the trip across the River Plate was fantastic and upon arrival we rented a buggi to visit the whole city, we had time to walk along the coast, explore the historic district of the city ... it is an experience that really worths it. If you decide to visit this particular Uruguayan city, remember to stop eating at ElDrugstore (with a pretty good colorful decor and a menu of meals, yes, something a little more expensive than normal) and if you want to eat with a view, drop by Meson de la Plaza, the fish is a delight, not to mention the wine!

P.S: Don't forget t change your money before your arrival in Uruguay, the hotel staff told us that they most of the restaurants and shops don't accept argentinian pesos!

Buenos Aires, Argentina/ Colonia, Uruguay - November 2012

San Francisco, California

Damos comienzo a otra de las grandes series: Estados Unidos. Hoy volvemos atrás en el tiempo, empezamos hablando de San Francisco, maravillosa ciudad que tuve la oportunidad de conocer en agosto de 2011. Después de casi dos meses de vacaciones, éste era la última de nuestras paradas por lo que podéis imaginaros que no hablaré de grandes lujos, ¡pero fue tan divertido!

Llegamos en coche desde Los Ángeles (donde teníamos fijada nuestra residencia, ya os hablaré de ello más adelante), después de 6 horas de conducir (sin casi parar, es decir, a parte de la gasolina y quizá algún que otro Denny's) a SF. Si alguna vez tenéis la oportunidad de poder realizar este viaje en coche, hacedlo, sé que quizá el avión sea mucho más cómodo, pero las vistas y el paisaje que vais a encontrar merecen la pena. Nosotros fuimos Los Ángeles- San Francisco por la Interestatal 5, por la parte "interna" de California, mientras que la vuelta la hicimos por la ruta 101.

We begin now another great series: United States. Today we go back in time, I'll start talking about San Francisco, wonderful city that I had the opportunity to visit in August 2011. Let me say that, after almost two months of holidays, this was the last of our stops,so you can imagine that there will be not luxury over here, but it was so much fun! 

We were driving from Los Angeles -where we had fixed our residence, and I promise I will talk about this later! And after 6 hours of almost non-stopping driving -apart from gas and perhaps the occasional Denny's) we arrived in SF . If you ever have the opportunity to take this trip by car, just do it! I know that perhaps the airplane is much more comfortable, but the views and landscapes you will be able to see are really worthwhile. We drove  Los Angeles-San Francisco by Interstate 5, the "inner" part of California, for the SF-LA part, we decided to take Route 101, and that was one of the greatest decisions we ever made!

¿Dónde dormir? Como ya os comenté antes, teníamos un presupuesto un tanto limitado. Queríamos conocer San Francisco y decidimos quedarnos en el típico hotel americano de las películas, si no me habéis entendido, aquí os dejo el link. El hotel se llamaba Rodeway Inn Civic Centre, era  un motelillo con parking y desayuno incluído (no os dejéis engañar, dan café americano gratis en la recepción). Estaba bien situado respecto al centro, podías llegar andando hasta Market St. y dar paseos, ¿lo malo? La calle se llenaba de vagabundos y había un poco de alboroto cuando se hacía de noche, por lo que estad dispuestos a coger taxis o a volver no muy tarde para evitar problemas. La limpieza de la habitación era buena, ésta era de tamaño normal, todo tal y como nos lo esperábamos por 145€ dos noches.

Where to sleep? As I said before, we had a somewhat limited budget. We wanted no-matter-what to visit San Francisco so we decided to stay in the typical American hotel you see on movies, if you don't understand what I mean, let me show you the hotel, it was called Rodeway Inn Civic Centre, parking and breakfast included (do not be fooled, American free coffee at reception, that's all folks!). Was pretty close to the center, you could easily walk to Market St. The wrong part: the street was filled with homeless and there was a bit of a fuss when it was getting dark, so be ready to catch taxis or go back to the hotel not too late to avoid problems. The cleanliness of the room was good, it was average size, everything as we expected for 145 €, two nights.

¿Qué visitar? Creo que todo el mundo que visita SF ha oído hablar de Golden Gate, Alcatraz, Twin Peaks, Lombard Street o el famosísimo Pier 39. La verdad es que son los sitios turísticos por definición, pero tienen que ser visitados. Por la maravillosas vistas que puedes tener, la originalidad de Lombard o el espíritu que se respira en el Pier (no os olvidéis de sentaros a tomar una caña con vistas a Alcatraz en Beer 39). Para los amantes del dulce, imprescindible que vayáis a la tienda Candy Baron, junto al Pier 39, podrás pasar horas perdido entre caramelos, manzanas dulces y cualquier otra cosa que te puedas imaginar, ¡un paraíso!

Where to go? I think that everyone who visits SF has heard of Golden Gate, Alcatraz, Twin Peaks, Lombard Street or the famous Pier 39. The truth is that these are touristic places by definition, but they MUST  be visited. Trust me, wonderful views of Alcatraz, the originality of Lombard or the spirit that you can breath at the Pier (do not forget to visit Beer 39, drink a beer while looking Alcatraz). For those sweet-lovers, stop by Candy Baron shop near the Pier 39, you will get lost between gummies, taffies, and anythign you could have ever asked for. A real paradise!

¿Dónde comer?  Para nuestra última noche en la ciudad nos dejamos caer por Pescatore. Habíamos leído sobre él y nos lo habían recomendado algunos amigos, ¡qué sorpresa! La verdad es que fue un restaurante de lo más acertado, el precio realmente bueno y el personal es encantador, totalmente recomendable. Lou's Fish Shack es bastante conocido, las hamburguesas son toda una delicia, no dudes en probarlas si te gusta la comida americana. Por supuesto tal y como os avisé en algún post anterior, no dejéis de ir a Whole Foods Market, hay varios en San Francisco, una elección sana y buenísima!

Where to eat? For our last night in town we dropped by Pescatore. We had read about him and had been recommended to some friends, what a surprise! The truth is it was a most successful restaurant, the price really good and the staff are lovely, totally recommended. Lou's Fish Shack is well known, the burgers are a delight, feel free to try if you like American food. And as I already said in another post, don't forget to go to Whole Foods Market for a healthy and great meal! There are like 5 on San Francisco area!
