Bienvenidos de nuevo a la costa oeste de Estados Unidos, sin  lugar a duda una de mis partes favoritas del mundo. Como ya os he comentado por aquí, he tenido la inmensa suerte de poder visitar California dos veces en estos tres últimos años: la primera vez, en 2011 y la última y más reciente, el pasado mes de agosto. Hoy me voy a centrar en la ciudad de San Diego y os tengo que montar tantas cosas… La primera vez que visitamos San Diego en Agosto de 2011 fue un viaje rápido que hicimos en coche desde Los Ángeles (a penas unas dos horas y media), como siempre Fabio y yo habíamos visto que se celebrara un festival de música en la zona (Vans Warped Tour) y decidimos acercarnos a conocerlo, durante nuestra estancia nos movimos por la zona de Little Italy, mientras que esta última vez que hemos estado (a finales de agosto, directos desde el aeropuerto internacional de Los Ángeles, donde nos vinieron a buscar unos amigos y pusimos rumbo a San Diego) nos quedamos por la zona del Downtown, así que prepararos para un mix de lugares, restaurantes y zonas que visitar en esta joya de ciudad.

Welcome back to the West Coast, one of my favourites places on Earth, no doubt! As I said many times before, I have been lucky enough to visit California twice in the past 3 years: the first one, back in 2011 and the last one, that past august. Today I will talk you guys about San Diego and I have many many things to tell you... The first time Fabio and I arrived here by car from Los Angeles -it was a 2h30min long trip-, and as usual, we were attending a music festival (Vans Warped Tour) so it was  quick trip, for these couple of days we decided to stay in Little Italy area while the last time (just landed in LAX  and off to San Diego, once again by car!)  we were in Downtown, so get ready for a mix of restaurants, bars, and places to visit in these amazing city!

¿Dónde dormir? He estado en dos partes diferentes de San Diego en las dos veces que he estado de visita. Durante la primera nos hospedamos en el Porta Vista hotel, en el barrio de Little Italy. El hotel tenía una ubicación estupenda, contaba con una azotea que se convierte en terraza durante los meses de  verano, y cuenta con un estupendo bar-restaurante llamado "Glass Door"  con unas vistas maravillosas de la ciudad. Fue una muy buena elección para nosotros, la relación calidad-precio era inmejorable, aunque sí es verdad que las habitaciones del hotel son un poco anticuadas, con un mobiliario algo pasado de moda, pero repito, estupendo por su ubicación y por el precio de la noche. Este pasado mes de agosto decidimos volver a viajar a Estados Unidos y, nada más aterrizar en LAX, nos montamos en el coche que habíamos alquilado junto a los amigos con los que íbamos a pasar estos 15 días y pusimos rumbo a San Diego. Esta vez nos hospedamos en el Downtown San Diego Lodge, como podréis ver, un hotel económico con una situación fabulosa. El hotel cuenta con un parking gratuito, un staff fabuloso y un servicio de limpieza muy servicial, la verdad es que pagamos muy poco por estar 4 noches, y el hotel se encontraba en una zona muy céntrica, podías llegar caminando a las zonas de bares y restaurantes más conocidos de la ciudad, así como acercarte hasta el puerto; se encuentra el pleno centro financiero, por lo que la zona está llena de cafeterías, supermercados, bares y... ¡cajeros automáticos! Una estupenda opción si buscas un hotel económico en la ciudad.

Where to sleep? I have been in two different areas of San Diego. The first one we stayed at Porta Vista Hotel, in Little Italy neighborhood. The hotel has an amazing location, the roof was opened as a bar during summertime and it has a fantastic restaurant-bar called "Glass Door"  with exquisite food and panoramic views of San Diego Marina. It was a great choice for us, the value was really good  even if the rooms needed a makeover .there were a little odd!  This past August  we decided to come back to the United States and, as soon as we landed at LAX, we rented a car and drove all the way down to San Diego with the friends that were going to travel these weeks with us. This time we stayed in Downtown San Diego Lodge,  and as you can see, a really economic hotel. There are so many things we liked about it, the free-parking, the lovely staff and the room service, and even if it's not the top of the hotels, the truth is that we pay about 100 dollars for 4 nights (per person), it was in financial district so there were plenty of bars, coffee shops, magazines, markets and ... atm! A great option if you are looking for an economic hotel in the middle of the city.

¿Qué hacer? Como gran ciudad, hay una enorme oferta de actividades, visitas y excursiones. La verdad es que a Fabio y a mí nos gusta más explorar las ciudad e ir encontrándonos con los planes, generalmente solemos echar un vistazo a webs como tripadvisor para ver cuáles son los lugares más recomendados, así como los restaurantes, pero este año fue especial porque uno de nuestros amigos es de Orange City así que conocía a la perfección cada rincón de la San Diego, por lo que nos descubrió bares, restaurantes y lugares que visitar que nos encantaron. Como íbamos a estar varios días en la ciudad  decidimos  disfrutarla al máximo, caminar por Harbor Drive con el océano atlántico a tu lado mientras disfrutas de algunos de los buques de la marina americana. No puedes irte de San Diego sin visitar las maravillosas Mission Beach y La Jolla, playas realmente espectaculares al más puro estilo americano. Por supuesto, una visita a Coronado Island es más que recomendada y no te olvides de disfrutar de las vistas cuando cruzas el famoso Coronado Bridge. Seguramente muchos de vosotros habréis oído hablar de SeaWorld y del zoo de San Diego, si sois amantes de los animales, ¡ID!  
Para comprar visitar el Westfield Horton Plaza, un centro comercial al abierto donde disfrutar de algunas de las más típicas tiendas americanas así como de distintos tipos de restaurantes (¡por supuesto, Whole Foods!) Otra opción muy recomendable son los outlets, para los que no lo sepáis y estéis pensando en visitar Estados Unidos, en muchas ciudad encontraréis outlets con las mejores marcas y con precios muy reducidos, son totalmente dignos de visitar. La verdad es que la gran mayoría de las compras que hemos hecho tanto en nuestra visita en 2011 como esta última ha sido en outlets, no podéis imaginar la cantidad de cosas que podéis encontrar a precios increíbles de los mejores diseñadores. Uno de los que más nos gustaron fue Las Americas Premium Outlets , a mitad de camino entre San Diego y Tijuana, echad un vistazo, pero realmente son sitios a los que ir antes de volver a casa!

Nosotros teníamos en mente visitar México, y en concreto Tijuana, y así lo hicimos. A penas a unos 40 minutos en coche desde San Diego, puedes aparcarlo en uno de los numerosos parkings de pago que hay antes de pasar la frontera y puedes llegar andando hasta la aduana, por supuesto lleva pasaporte porque a pesar de que a la entrada nadie se preocupa de mirar tu documentación, no es lo mismo a la vuelta (en la que, os adelanto, tendrás que estar dispuesto a esperar horas bajo el sol californiano o, pasar al menos una hora o dos dentro de unos autobuses que se encargan de hacerte el recorrido con aire acondicionado previo pago de 5dólares) . Tijuana es una ciudad muy particular, me encantó el mercado Miguel Hidalgo, y una especial mención a Tacos el Gordo, los mejores tacos que he probado en mi vida.


What to do? As the big city San Diego is, it has a huge offer of activities, visits and trips. The truth is that Fabio and I are more the kind of travellers that just walk around the city and bump into new plans, often we take a look at websites like tripadvisor to see which are the most recommended places to see as well as restaurants but this time it was special since one of the friends we were travelling with is from Orange City so he knew pretty well every single corner of San Diego, we were so lucky because we discovered pubs, restaurants and spots that we probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. As we were actually going to spend a couple of days in SD we wanted to enjoy it as much as possible, walking along Harbor Drive while you feel the smell of the ocean right next to you and see some of the American Navy ships. You can't leave the city unless you have enjoy Mission Beach and La Jolla,  all american style beaches. Of course,visit Coronado Island and don't forget to enjoy the views while you're crossing Coronado Bridge. I'm pretty sure you will have heared of SeaWorld and San Diego zoo, well if you love animals, you MUST go!
If you want to go shopping you should visit Westfield Horton Plaza, an open shopping centre where you will find the most famous american brands and also many restaurants (and of course our beloved Whole Foods!) Another very great options are outlets, for those who don't know about them and are planning to visit US soon, in many cities all across the coutry you will find these outlets with the best brands with extraordinary savings. I could say that most of the shopping we did in these years were here and our favourite one was Las Americas Premium Outlets, half way between Tijuana and San Diego, the trip worths it!
As soon as we knew that San Diego was one of the stops in the trip we planned to visit Mexico, specifically Tijuana. We drove from SD to the border (about 40min), left the car in one of the many parking that there are over there and walked until we were in Mexico, of course don't forget your passport because even if once you are getting into Tijuana no one will look at your documents once you want to come back you will have to wait a very long long line for going back to the States (sometimes about 2 or 3 hours, we were lucky to wait just 1h15min), so get ready for wait under the cali's hot sun or you can always pay 5 dollars and do the line inside a bus with air conditioning! I loved Tijuana, is such a particular city, I felt in love with Miguel Hidalgo market  where you can buy everything you have ever imagined, and of course, stop by Tacos el Gordo, the best tacos I have ever ever tasted!

¿Dónde comer? La verdad es que San Diego tiene una grandísima variedad de locales, pero como ya sabéis, os hablo de aquellos en los que he estado y he probado. Si eres amante de los buenos desayunos, tienes distintas opciones en la zona del downtown, no puedes irte sin probar las maravillosas creaciones del Donut Bar, ha ganado numerosos premios como el mejor restaurante de la ciudad, hacen donuts de todos los tamaños y sabores, por no hablar de sus fantásticos batidos (no podéis ni imaginar la de veces que me quedaba mirando en el escaparate cómo creaban desde cero el donut, era estupendo) Atención, te recomiendo ir con tiempo porque se forman filas, y a pesar de que suelen atenderte con bastante rapidez, a veces durante hasta 30min!Justo al lado encontrarás Robeks Juice  para los amantes de los smoothies, batidos orgánicos o proteicos, puedes elegir entre una gran variedad e incluso crearlos tú mismo. En la esquina de esa misma manzana podrás disfrutar de auténticos desayunos estrella, sólo tienes que pedir mesa en Sixth Avenue Bistro,irresistible.  En pleno centro de San Diego encontraréis House of Blues , es un local muy especial, totalmente recomendado tanto para los amantes de la música como a los que no lo son tanto, probad sus nachos y sus aros de cebolla, buenísimos los sándwiches, y si podéis, no dejéis de asistir a alguna de las actuaciones en directo que suelen tener los fines de semana. Y ahora va una de mis aportaciones estrella, haced lo imposible por comer/cenar en Phils BBQ, aquí también se suele hacer cola porque el local es muy popular, pero os prometo que son de esas colas de las que te olvidas en cuanto empiezas a comer. Para amantes de la carne, este es vuestro destino. Platos buenísimos, enormes y a un precio realmente estupendo, sin mencionar la amabilidad del servicio, gracias a nuestro amigo a Omar que nos descubrió este inolvidable restaurante, top!

Where to eat? As usual, San Diego has a huge amount of bars, restaurants and pubs, so I will talk about the ones I went to both times. For breakfast lovers, you can't miss Donut Bar and its absolutely a-m-a-z-i-n-g donuts, you will find different sizes, flavours and colours and all of them tastes divine! Oh, and I recommend to go a bit early because there will be line no matter what!  Right next to it you will find Robeks Juice for smoothies, organic and protein milshakes - lovers, you can choose your favourite one from the menu or even do it yourself!   If you want to enjoy a great continental breakfast, you won't have to go further, because in the same street you will find Sixt Avenue Bistro, so tasty!  If you are looking for a pub where you can have great food and also enjoy good music, visit House of Blues, ah! and also try its nachos and onion rings or  order one of their huge sandwiches! And here it comes a great discovery, please please pleeeease go and have lunch/dinner at Phils BBQ, yes, you will also have to line up but trust me, it worths every single minute! It's a very popular restaurant in San Diego and I thank our dear friend Omar every single day for making us taste its wonderful food, if you love bbq and if you like meat, this will be your paradise. Huge dishes, great great food and fantastic prices - not to mention the lovely staff- ...
