Como ya os he dicho anteriormente, durante el verano de 2011 tuve la oportunidad de viajar por Estados Unidos. Nuestra "base" estaba en Venice Beach,Ca. Una de las escapadas que hice junto a Fabio fue a la maravillosa isla de Oahu, en Hawaii. Como podréis ver en las fotos, todo lo que se dice de Hawaii y sus islas es cierto, es un verdadero paraíso.  Nunca he visto unas playas tan maravillosas, un agua tan cristalina, unos paisajes tan salvajes… Para nuestra estancia, que creo recordar fueron 5 días, decidimos viajar por la isla, así que a nuestra llegada al aeropuerto de Honolulu alquilamos un coche y nos dirigimos hacia la zona norte (con parada obligatoria en Pearl Harbor) donde pasamos dos noches, para luego bordear la otra parte de la isla hasta llegar a Honolulu y pasar las últimas noches.

Esta vez viajamos con la compañía United Airlines, a pesar de que nos habían dicho que era una de las compañía que registraba más retrasos y pérdidas de maleta, la verdad es que nuestro viaje fue muy agradable. No hubo reatrasos, ni pérdidas, las 5 horas de vuelo se hicieron muy amenas.

As I said before, in the summer of 2011 I had the opportunity to travel around United States. Our "base" was in Venice Beach, Ca. One of the trips I  did with Fabio was to the beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii. As you can see from the photos, all that is said about Hawaii and its islands is true, it's a true paradise on earth. I have never seen such beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, wild landscapes... For our stay, which if I'm not wrong it was for 5 days, we decided to travel around the island, so as soon as we landed at Honolulu airport, we rented a car and headed to the northern zone (of course we stopped by Pearl Harbor!!) where we spent two nights, then we skirt the other side of the island to get to Honolulu and spend the last few nights.

This time we were flying with United Airlines, even though we were told that it was one of the companies that registered more delays and lost-luggage the truth is that our trip was fantastic. There were no delays, nothing was missing and the 5-hours flight were enjoyable!

¿Dónde dormir?  Las dos primeras noches en la isla nos hospedamos en el Backpackers vacation Inn & Hostel, en North Shore. Para que os hagáis una idea existen diferentes tipos de alojamientos: cabañas rodeadas de vegetación (cada cabaña tenía una zona común con salón,cocina y baño y después las habitaciones individuales), y otros tres edificios principales con camas en habitaciones compartidas. Nosotros compartimos nuestra cabaña con una pareja de Dinamarca, como generalmente la gente que se hospeda allí son surfistas o excursionistas (y luego están las parejas jóvenes, como nuestro caso) el hotel tiene muy buen ambiente. La verdad es que fue toda una aventura, desde el hotel podías llegar hasta la playa de Pupukea (simplemente espectacular) y puedes llegar caminando hasta Waimea Bay. Totalmente recomendable por la posición, el precio y las vistas.

Para nuestra estancia en Honolulu elegimos el Aston at the Waikiki Banyan, en plena playa de Waikiki. El hotel era algo antiguo, con un mobiliario y una decoración un tanto pasada de moda, pero el servicio era estupendo, siempre muy amables y adaptándose a cualquier necesidad que tuvieras, la relación calidad-precio fue inmejorable, por no hablar de que las vistas eran estupendas y tenías al rededor una gran cantidad de restaurantes y tiendas.

Where to sleep?  For our first two nights in the island we stayed at the Backpackers vacation Inn &Hostel, in North Shore.There were many different types of accomodations: cabins (each one with common lounge, kitchen and bathroom) and other 3 main buildings with beds in shared rooms.  We shared our cabin with a couple from Denmark, as people staying there are usually surfers or hikers (and then, there are young couples like us!) the hotel has a great atmosphere. The truth is that is was a great adventure, from the hotel you can reach Pupukea Beach (simply amazing) and also you can go walking to Waimea Bay. Completly recommended for the location, price and fantastic views. 

While we were in Honolulu we chose the Aston at the Waikiki Banyan hotel, in Waikiki Bay. The hotel was quite old, furniture and decor a bit dated but the staff was really friendly, the value was unbeatable, not to mention the amazing views!

¿Dónde comer? Lo que solíamos hacer mientras estuvimos en Oahu era ir a un supermercado local y comprar algo de comida, solíamos cenar fuera (sobre todo en Honolulu, donde hay una mayor oferta de restaurantes). Mientras estuvimos en la parte norte de la isla, probamos la comida mexicana (y sus bebidas, no nos engañemos) de Cholos Homestyle Mexican Restaurant , como ya sabéis, Fabio y yo somos auténticos fans de la comida mexicana, así que nos encantó encontrar un restaurante que donde se comiera tan bien. Para picar en la zona solíamos ir a Kono's Big Wave Cafe (como verás en las fotografías, tampoco está demás pasarse para comer uno de sus famosísimos bocadillos gigantes): barato, abundante y sabroso,¿para qué más?  Y como ya os adelanté antes, la restauración en Honolulu es mucho más amplia y variada, así que empecemos. No puedes irte de Oahu sin probar una de las hamburguesas de Teddy's Bigger Burgers ... Simplemente, espectaculares, la mejor hamburguesa de mi vida, sin lugar a duda. Es una pena que casi toda su actividad se centre en Hawaii, ¡no os podéis imaginar lo riquísimas que estaban! Algo de lo que os habréis dado cuenta quienes hayáis visitados Estados Unidos es la cantidad de buffets que hay, bien, en Honolulu no iba a ser menos así que una de nuestras noches decidimos cenar en uno de ellos, exactamente en el Makittii, con una estupenda relación calidad-precio, podías degustar marisco, carne, comida asiática, mexicana e indú, ¡y no hablemos de los postres!

Where to eat?  What Fabio and I used to do while we were in Oahu was going to a local market and buy some food, that way we could spend less money  and be sure that we were eating something that we liked, even if we used to have dinner out. So while we were in the northern aerea we tasted the fantastic mexican food (and, let's say it, drinks!) of Cholos Homestyle Mexican Restaurant. As you may remember, Fabio and I are huge mexican food fans, so we were sooo happy to find a restaurant where everything was so tasty!   To grab something we liked going to Kono's Big Wave Cafe (as you can see in the pictures, you can also stop by to eat their huge sandwiches): cheap, abundant and great, what else? And as I said before, Honolulu's choices were more than in North Shore, so let's start:  You CAN'T  leave Hawaii without eating in Teddy's Bigger Burgers ... Simply amazing, the best burguer I have ever tasted. It's so sad most of their restaurants are in Hawaii, you can't imagine how great they are! And, something that you will have notices if you have visited US is that there are buffets everywhere, so Honolulu was no exception. For our last night in the island we chose Makittii buffet, with a great value and indian, mexican, asian food, not to mention desserts!

¿Qué hacer?  La verdad es que la isla de Oahu tiene una gran cantidad de lugares por visitar. Además de la magnífica playa de Waikiki, si podéis no dudéis en alquilar un coche y visitar North Shore, la parte norte de Oahu,  y ver las magníficas puestas de sol en Pupukea Beach o Waimea Bay. En la parte este de la isla, la bahía de Kailua es una de las más espectaculares (la verdad es que vayas donde vayas encontrarás playas paradisíacas con aguas completamente cristalinas)... Parada casi obligatoria es Pearl Harbor (atentos, no intentéis comprar algo en los supermercados de la zona, la mayoría son estrictamente reservados a los veteranos y marines, constatado!). Me consta que hay una gran cantidad de excursiones por la isla en las que podrás ir  a caballo,en coche o autobús, la verdad es que nosotros no hicimos ninguna así que os dejo el link a la página oficial para que podáis echar un vistazo si estáis interesados.

What to do? The truth is that Oahu Island has so many beautiful places to see. In addition to fantastic Waikiki Beach, if you can I recommend you to rent a car and travel around the island, go to North Shore and enjoy Pupukea Beach or Waimea Bay and its spectacular sunsents. In the eastern part of Oahu you will find Kailua Bay, my favourite beach so far... Not to mention Pearl Harbor, such an obligatory stop! (Note! Do not wait to be able to buy something inside a local supermarket, most of them are strictly reserved for locals and marines). I know that there are plenty of activities and trips around the island that you can do by car, bus or ridding, but as I didn't do any of them I will give you the link to the Oahu official website, take a look if you are interested!
